2016 Bird List

Below are 2016 survey reports from the Grays Harbor NWR Wildlife Biologist and Refuge Volunteers. Surveys are conducted every few days during shorebird migration. All surveys are begun just before high tide and are conducted along the Sandpiper Trail at the Refuge.

Comments: Low high tide left mudflats mostly exposed even at high tide. Birds were foraging elsewhere.

Comments: Great viewing conditions. No rain/no sun/no wind. Could see Mini Moon Island with no heat waves and no glare. On Mini Moon Island counted 26 Black-bellied Plovers (assume Black-bellied!), 6 Yellowlegs spp., 8 Dowitcher spp., and 24 Red Knots. And this was just on the easter portion of the island.

Comments: Sunny, tide left mud exposed. Birds left for no obvious reason.

Comments: 500 Greater White-fronted Geese flew over. Falcon activity cleared the basin before the tide came all the way in. 9.1' tide. High water flooded all the shorebird habitat for almost 1.5 hours around high tide.
